This concept — Playlist Journals — is a hybrid Spotify-integrated app that turns playlists into expressive, living journal entries. Music is already how we tell our stories. This app gives it a proper home. If you’re a developer, designer, or strategist and want to be part of bringing it to life, reach out.
PROJECT BRIEF: Playlist Journals
Lab: Novel Logic
Status: Concept Phase — MVP scoping underway
Seeking: Front-end & back-end devs, UX/UI, branding, product strategy
Keywords: audio journaling, social music, memory & emotion, Spotify API, creative UX
THE PITCH
Spotify delivers the sound. But there’s nowhere to tell the story.
Every playlist is a memoir. A love letter. A breakup elegy. A summer road trip. But while Spotify handles the playback, it doesn’t give users a place to reflect, annotate, or share what that music actually means to them.
This project adds that missing layer — turning Spotify playlists into rich, expressive journals people can write, design, and share. We don’t compete with Spotify; we partner with it as the audio engine while we build the emotional, artistic, and social frontend.
The result? A platform where people don’t just listen — they create, connect, and preserve the story behind the sound.
HOW IT WORKS
This is a hybrid architecture:
Spotify = music backend
-
Handles playlist content (songs, order, metadata)
-
Provides OAuth login and user authentication
-
Manages play counts, permissions, and playback
-
Keeps your app lightweight by offloading all music hosting
Your App = creative journal frontend
-
Custom UI that displays playlists beautifully
-
Connected journaling space — text, audio, image, moodboard
-
Social layer with follows, feeds, reactions
-
Stores and manages all user-generated content tied to Spotify playlist IDs
FEATURE BREAKDOWN
1. OAuth Login with Spotify
-
Secure login via Spotify
-
Pull user playlists (read-only)
-
Optional scope: write-access for playlist edits through your app
2. Playlist Display + Journaling Canvas
Each playlist becomes a media object and a canvas for expression:
-
Cover art, title, and song list via Spotify
-
Custom fields: description, long-form writing, tags
-
Optional: embedded voice memos, images, or video clips
Example Journal Titles:
-
“Songs I Cried To Last Winter”
-
“The Sound of Leaving a City You Loved”
-
“I Made This for You But You’ll Never Hear It”
3. Playlist Journals
-
Entries stored in your own database, linked via Spotify Playlist ID
-
Journals are editable, timestamped, and optionally private
-
Journals appear in a user’s profile and feed
Entry types:
-
Long-form text
-
Images and links
-
Moodboards
-
Voice memos
-
Embedded links (Bandcamp, Substack, YouTube)
4. Social Feed + Follow System
-
Users can follow other users’ journals
-
Feed shows:
-
New playlist journals
-
Playlist updates (optional toggle)
-
Description/mood/tag updates
-
5. Optional Enhancements
-
Reactions (emoji only)
-
Commenting (toggle on/off)
-
Private or “friends only” journals
-
Tag playlists by feelings, seasons, cities, breakups, phases
-
PDF/zine-style export of journals for archival or gift-giving
WHY THIS IS SMART
-
You don’t host or stream music — Spotify handles that.
-
You’re adding a layer of meaning, expression, and connection that Spotify doesn’t offer.
-
The model leans into what people already do — make playlists as emotional artifacts — and gives them tools to express more deeply.
-
Music discovery becomes emotional, not algorithmic.
-
Ownership stays with the user — you’re not competing with the music industry, you’re amplifying the emotional resonance of playlists.
